This simple poem was written while I was serving a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is for the converts who never experienced primary school. I want them to know that they can take part in all of the blessing of the Gospel despite not having it in the earlier years of their lives. I have included scriptural references which elaborate on the details referenced in the poem.
When Jesus was a Sunbeam
He surely had to be
A little restless as
He sat in Primary
Though He was God’s offspring[i]
He was a child still
In need of Sunday teachers
To lead Him in God’s will
When Jesus was a Sunbeam
He was well prepared
By His earthly parents
For Him they loved and cared[ii]
His classroom walls were simple
Made of wood and stone
His teachers too were called of God
To teach Him in His home
When Jesus was a Sunbeam
He learned what He should know
From His mother Mary
And earthly father Jo
They taught Him to have patience
To be diligent and true
By guidance and by love
In faith and light He grew
When Jesus was a Sunbeam
With hands feeble and small
He was the chosen Savior
Whose hands were pierced for all
The Savior too was mortal
But knew His purpose well
He counseled with God daily
Transcending through the veil
When Jesus was a Sunbeam
God smiled on His mind
So He could be a symbol
Example to mankind
By the works of Jesus
We know that we must pray
Worship and bear testimony
Help others on their way
When Jesus was a twelve-year-old
His parents had a scare
They went back to Jerusalem
And found Him teaching there[iii]
Inside the temple walls He sat
Among the intellects
Preaching truth and sharing light
With all the different sects[iv]
When Jesus was a teenager
He would have studied out
The words that God had given Him
The spring before the drought[v]
He did increase in wisdom
He did increase in favor
In the sight of man and God[vi]
His hand in worthy labor
When Jesus was a grown-up
When performing miracles
He showed the world what God does through
The Savior of our souls
He helped the sick and weary
He made the blind to see[vii]
He turned the water into wine[viii]
By holy priesthood key
When Jesus was a grown-up
He fed the multitudes
By power and by faith
Sparse fish and bread to use[ix]
Every waking hour
Working faithfully
‘Til the time was ripe to go
To Gethsemane
When Jesus was a grown-up
He wore a crown of thorns[x]
He was slapped and spit upon
With purple robes adorned[xi]
He was raised high on a cross
A spectacle for those
Who saw the greatest sacrifice
Before His spirit rose[xii]
When Jesus was a grown-up
When hung on Calvary
He drew upon the simple truths
Those learned since infancy
Battered, beat, and broken
A spear wound in His side[xiii]
He gave ALL He had to give
Heavenward He cried
When Jesus was a grown-up
He had mercy and forgave[xiv]
Even with His dying breath
And the whole world to save[xv]
He prayed unto the Father
Held faithful to the end
With fighting strength and dignity
No one can comprehend
When Jesus was a grown-up
Perhaps He came to see
That all the things that pressed Him on
He learned in Primary
